| Summary, etc. | La Sal de los Cerros se refiere a aquella mina de sal ubicada en la región del río Perené que, por milenios fue uno de los centros más importantes de intercambio y cultura en la vida ashaninka y en la de los otros pueblos indígenas de la selva amazónica. Hasta hoy en su ladera descansan los restos de Juan Santos Atahualpa, el líder mítico, al parecer de origen cusqueño, que encabezó la defensa ashaninla del Gran Pajonal y del Cerro de la Sal, frente a las incursiones misioneras y militares en el virreinato en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII. Juan Santos Atahualpa no fue derrotado y el hecho de autoproclamarse Inca lo hizo líder mesiánico de ambos mundos: el andino y el amazónico.<br/>Para Stefano Varese, la capacidad de resistencia y mantención orgullosa de la identidad ashaninka estaría en la concepción cíclica del tiempo y la escatología del universo, y en la forma de su organización familiar que admite la poliginia para establecer unidades de familias extensas capaces de ocupar vastos territorios del bosque en una estrategia de cultivo itinerante llamado "de roza".
