Summary, etc.	En este volumen se presentan diversos aportes a la educación de adultos en general y específicamente, a la educación y alfabetización de jóvenes y adultos en sociedades multiculturales en África y Latinoamérica.<br/>En el marco de la Quinta conferencia Internacional de Educación de Adultos (CONFINTEA V), llevada a cabo en Hamburgo en Julio de 1997, se organizo el Simposium "Alfabetización y Educación de Adultos en lenguas indígenas" con patrocinio de la UNESCO y la sociedad Alemana de Cooperación técnica (GTZ). A continuación de la conferencia de Hamburgo se realizo en Eschborn, en el recinto de la GTZ, un encuentro entre representantes de programas de alfabetización en diversos países de África y Latinoamérica.<br/>Originalmente la educación formal, concebida fundamentalmente para élites urbanas, no se sentía estorbada por las diversidad lingüística y cultural. La diferencia campo-ciudad estaba presente pero no visible.<br/>Recién con los procesos de apertura o democratización de la escuela publica se logra un vuelco en la percepción de la realidad social y, en consecuencia, pedagógica.<br/>Pero, si bien se continuo con el mismo espíritu de los patrones de enseñanza, la expansión de la escuela publica permitió, sin embargo, la evidencia de diversas realidades y, en consecuencia, la evidencia de diferentes modos de vivir, pensar, aprender y comunicar.
