Summary, etc.	Internet basa su funcionamiento en la existencia de diversas tecnologías que han ido apareciendo desde principios de los años ochenta. Ahora bien, el componente fundamental que permite un funcionamiento consistente y armonioso de toda la amalgama existente de redes es el protocolo IP. Dentro de la aparición gradual de nuevas tecnologías de red, a principios de los años noventa, vio la luz una tecnología muy prometedora: las redes ATM, que permitieron velocidades de transmisión de 34 Mbit/s así como el transporte de datos, voz y vídeo. Este libro describe las bases técnicas de Internet y de las redes ATM y constata el impacto que ha tenido la aparición de éstas sobre el aumento de la capacidad de transmisión y del numero de usuarios de Internet. Aborda asimismo los fundamentos de la inclusión de redes ATM en Internet.<br/>
